Starting the year 2024 with a musical bang! After careful planning and execution under the supervision of the Head of English Language Unit, Ms Alariece Christynne Tay and Programme Coordinator, Ms Nurafida Ahmad, the academic excellence programme, Linguaphoria: Quintessence of English drew its final curtain on 9 March 2024 with a musical drama competition.
Themed Fairy Tales: The Untold, the competition showcased the studentsā talent in adapting fairy tales into their own original versions. 14 teams competed during the preliminary round on 24 February 2024 and 6 teams were chosen to perform at the grand finale.
The whimsical, magical and musical grand finale was graced by the Director of Kolej Matrikulasi Labuan, Mr Mohd Mahyuddin bin Hj Mohd Noordin and the Head of Jabatan Sastera Ikhtisas, Mr Ridzuan bin Mat Kasim.
Attended by about 500 students, the night witnessed the acting and singing talent from 6 teams. Team Wishful Notes was crowned as the champion with their musical drama, Bittersweet Serenade: Unveiling the Tale of the Genie. It was directed by Cynthia Olavarria Johnny and based on Aladdin. The first runner-up, team Unravel, also based their drama, Lamp: The Unravel, on Aladdin. It was directed by Jerome Pawista and Ryna Delinda Yesiling. Team DāLuna with The Tell Tale of the Wolf, inspired by Little Red Riding Hood and directed by Noor Syazwanna binti Ab Salam and Abigale Sarah Boyd, was placed third. The other three teams were Crimson Crescendo, Storybook Sonatas, Once Upon a Couch.
The team, Unravel, won the most individual awards - Best Actor (Ahmad Faqhrulzami bin Yacob as Zaheer), Best Musical Arrangement, and Most Creative (Costumes and Props). Once Upon a Couch took home two individual awards - Best Singer (Christabelle Peter Jr Naintin as Rapunzel) and Best Narrator (Nur Aleya Syafiqa binti Mohd Azri). Wishful Notes won one individual award - Best Storyline.
The winners were decided by three judges, two of which were invited judges - Ms. Joscey Joseph of SMK Labuan and Ms. Susana Francis of Labuan International School. Another judge was Ms Monaliza Hassan from Kolej Matrikulasi Labuan.
Also from the programme Linguaphoria: Quintessence of English, a public speaking competition, Speakerās Corner, was held on 16 February 2024. Themed Science and Technology, the competition showcased 12 individual speakers who each delivered an impromptu speech based on a given topic.
The best speaker award went to Danish Raziq Syazani. The first runner-up and the second runner-up went to Suziana Laie Stoney and Fatini Najmina binti Zulkifli respectively.
The winners were decided by three judges from the English Language Unit of Kolej Matrikulasi Labuan - Mr Mohd Radzi bin Noh, Mr Jangal Barau and Mr Brian Chang Boon Chew.
