Question
a) Define adiabatic process.
[ 3 marks ]

b) Figure above shows various process in the PV-plane for an ideal gas. The process AC is an adiabatic, AB is an isotherm, and BC is a constant-volume process. The heat is added to the gas along AB is 400 cal. The change in internal energy from C to A is 1000 cal, and the shaded area is 150 cal.
i) How much work is done by the gas from A to B.
ii) What is the change in internal energy from C to D.
( 252 cal = 1.054 x 103 J )
[ 7 marks ]
Ans: a) Refer to your lecturer. b.i) 627.4 J ; ii) -3.555 x 103 J.

Question
a) Ice has a density of 0.92 × 103 kgm-3, and therefore floats in water. What fraction of a floating piece of ice is submerged?
[ 3 marks ]
b) A single ice cube of mass 8.4 g floats in a glass that is completely full of 350 cm3 of water. Ignore the water’s surface tension and its variation in density with temperature (as long as it remains a liquid).
i) When the ice cube has completely melted, has any water overflowed? Explain.
ii) Suppose the water in the glass had been very salty water of density 1050 kgm-3. What volume of salt water would the 8.4g ice cube displace?
[ 7 marks ]
Ans: a) 0.92. b.i) No ; ii) 8 x 10-6 m-3.
